JACKKNIFE
A lone hitchhiker accepts a ride from Jackie on a snowy rural highway. Read, choose, and find out where the road takes you.
If the player stays blank, open the game in a new tab. The embedded build is hosted separately and may be unavailable at times.
How to play JACKKNIFE
JACKKNIFE is a choice-driven Ren'Py visual novel by llonelly. There is no combat or driving to control. You move through dialogue and choose the hitchhiker's replies; the creator describes branching paths based on those choices.
Let the player load, then choose Start from the game's menu. Click inside the frame first if keyboard controls do not respond.
Left-click, press Space, or press Enter to advance text. Read a complete line before selecting a response.
Select a dialogue option with the mouse, or navigate the menu with arrow keys and Enter. Choices can change later scenes.
Open the in-game menu with Esc or right-click and use Save before major decisions. Use Load to compare another route.
Controls and useful habits
| Action | Standard Ren'Py control | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Advance dialogue | Left-click, Space, or Enter | Read the story and confirm a selected option. |
| Open menu | Esc or right-click | Save, load, or change preferences if the build exposes them. |
| Review a recent line | Page Up or scroll up | Rollback when enabled by this build; use a manual save for reliable route changes. |
| Full screen | F11 or Alt+Enter | Use the game's full-screen mode when supported by your browser. |
The creator's download page currently labels JACKKNIFE a prototype and offers Windows, macOS, and Linux files. The browser player above is a separate hosted build; its save behavior or controls may differ from the downloadable release. Keep a separate save slot before each branch.
JACKKNIFE walkthrough and route planner
The creator confirms branching narrative paths but has not published an official choice-by-choice ending chart. This guide covers a complete first run, the useful save points, one player-reported survival route, and a method for finding alternate outcomes without guessing at hidden scores.
First run without spoilers
- Start a new game and let the first ride play naturally. Notice what Jackie says about the road and what the hitchhiker reveals about her past.
- Make a manual save before your first substantial reply to Jackie. Choose whichever response you would use; write it down if you want to compare later.
- Save again when the story offers a decision about remaining in or leaving the truck at night.
- Make a third save before the later encounter involving another rider. Finish the story once before using Load to explore alternatives.
Choice checkpoints
| Checkpoint | Save slot | What to compare on replay |
|---|---|---|
| Early conversation with Jackie | Slot A | Open, trusting replies against guarded or inquisitive replies. |
| Night at the truck | Slot B | Staying in the cab against investigating outside, if offered. |
| Encounter with the other rider | Slot C | Following the instruction to return against resisting or continuing the confrontation. |
Spoiler route: player-reported survival outcome
- Respond cooperatively to Jackie and avoid probing her secrets in the early conversation.
- Choose affectionate or flirtatious replies when the game offers them.
- At night, stay in the truck.
- When the other rider tells you to go back, return instead of escalating the encounter.
This sequence is a player's account in the developer's itch.io comments, not an official route guarantee. The player reported an ending where Jackie does not kill the hitchhiker; exact wording and results may vary by build.
Find the other branches
Load Slot C and change only the final encounter choice. If the scene changes, record the result, then return to Slot B and switch the night decision while keeping the earlier conversation the same. Last, load Slot A and change your approach to Jackie. Changing one checkpoint at a time makes it clear which choice led to a new scene or ending. Keep separate save slots for distinct outcomes instead of overwriting the first run.
The official listing mentions nine CGs and branching paths, but does not name a fixed number of endings. Treat any third-party ending count as unverified until you can match it against the build you are playing. The developer has also announced plans to continue the game, so future releases may change routes.
